What does a chiropractic adjustment actually do?

A Chiropractic adjustment is a manual therapy technique which forms the basis of the chiropractic care. It involves the application of a controlled and sudden force to a joint to restore its function and improve its range of motion. The adjustment can result in a popping or cracking sound, which is the release of gas bubbles in the joint. Chiropractic adjustments are primarily performed on the spine but can also be done on other joints such as the shoulders, hips, and knees. It can help in Shooting sciatic nerve pain.

What is a Chiropractic Adjustment?

A chiropractic adjustment, also known as spinal manipulation, is a non-invasive manual therapy technique designed to correct muscular-skeletal imbalances, such as Shooting sciatic nerve pain, back pain, neck pain, and more. The technique of delivering an adjustment consists in first carefully locating the area of the imbalances to assess the position of the joint.

Then the adjustment is delivered to reposition that joint back to its optimal range and position. To achieve this, an experienced Chiropractor will deliver a controlled high velocity low amplitude force to a specific joint to improve its function and mobility. The aim of the adjustment is to reduce pain, improve joint function, and improve the quantity and quality of movement. Chiropractors use their hands or a small instrument to apply the adjustment.

Why are Adjustments of the spine performed?

Chiropractic spinal adjustments are performed to correct imbalances of the muscular skeletal system, typically in the form of misaligned vertebrae or other joints. These imbalances are called subluxations. The reason chiropractors use spinal and other type of adjustments is to alleviate pain and improve the function of the neuromusculoskeletal system. The adjustment can be used to treat a variety of conditions including back pain, Shooting sciatic nerve pain, neck pain, headaches, and pain in the joints. The adjustment is also commonly used to improve posture and prevent future injuries.

Chiropractic manipulations can improve motor function and brain processing.

Haavik’s research has shown that spinal manipulation can lead to increased brain activity and improved sensory integration, which can ultimately result in better motor function. (Reference: Haavik et al. 2008)

Types of Chiropractic Adjustment

There are several types of adjustment techniques Chiropractors use, including the diversified technique, the activator method, and Gonstead technique. The diversified technique is the most common and involves a high-velocity, low-amplitude thrust to the joint. The activator method uses a small handheld instrument to apply a gentle force to the joint.

The Gonstead technique involves a specific analysis of the spine to determine the exact location of the adjustment. Other techniques involve the y-strap for traction and low amplitude high velocity adjustments and the Thomson drop-tables to use low resistance whilst the body drops a few inches down to re-adjust the pelvis and other key structures. Experienced Chiropractors often combine different techniques for maximum effect during each individual session.

There’s also a specific adjustment for every joint of the body and often different techniques for adjusting different sections of the spine because the vertebrae in the spinal sections differ anatomically. The spine comprises of the cervical spine, thoracic spine and lumbar spine. Then there’s the specific joints such as ankles, feet, knee, shoulders, elbows, wrists, etc.

Asking the right Chiropractic Questions

Some researchers who investigate chiropractic as an effective conservative healthcare system, can be misled by some information available online. The biggest reason for that is the fact that often opinions are passed off as fact and questions are being raised that cause confusion instead of clarifying.

Some of these questions include things such as: What are the disadvantages of chiropractic, what do doctors think of chiropractors, what are chiropractic adjustment side effects, are chiropractors dangerous, what toxins are released after chiropractic adjustments.

The better the quality of a question, the better the answer. There’s a growing body of research, studies and evidence that supports the safety and efficacy of Chiropractic care for back pain, Shooting sciatic nerve pain, neck & shoulder pain and headaches. Chiropractic as with any conservative healthcare system, is not a silver bullet that will solve all your lives’ problems. It is however highly effective at helping clients with neuromusculoskeletal imbalances.

Here are some great questions to ask your Chiropractor:

Q1. Can you explain how your treatment approach will specifically address my condition or symptoms?

Q2. What kind of results can I expect from chiropractic care, and how long does it typically take to see improvements?

Q3. What measures do you take to ensure the safety and well-being of your patients during chiropractic adjustments?

Q4. Are there any potential risks or side effects associated with the treatments you provide, and how do you minimize them?

Q5. Can you provide examples or testimonials of patients with similar conditions who have benefited from your care?

Note: The above questions can only be accurately answered after conducting a full initial chiropractic assessment so that the response, the Chiropractor provides to each question, will be given in the context of your specific root cause diagnosis and related issues.

What are the Uses of Chiropractic

Chiropractors use a variety of diagnostic techniques to determine the location of the adjustment. They will often perform a physical exam and take a medical history to identify the underlying cause of the pain or dysfunction. In some cases, imaging tests such as X-rays, Nerve function and EMG muscle function scans, MRIs (where available) may be used to provide additional information.

Do Spinal Adjustments hurt?

Spinal adjustments are not typically painful, but some patients may experience mild discomfort during the procedure. The adjustment can cause a popping or cracking sound, which is caused by the release of gas bubbles in the joint. This sound is not an indicator of pain or discomfort.

Benefits of Spinal Mobilizations

In addition to alleviating pain and improving joint function, spinal adjustments/mobilizations can also improve circulation, reduce inflammation, and enhance the function of the nervous system. This can lead to improved overall health and wellbeing.

Beyond the Cracking or Popping Sound

Spinal adjustments deliver far more than just the popping or cracking sound that is often associated with them. The adjustment is a therapeutic technique that can improve joint function, reduce pain, and enhance overall health and vitality.

Relieve Pain with Spinal Manipulations

Chiropractic adjustments can be a safe and effective treatment for acute and chronic pain. The adjustment can help to reduce inflammation, improve circulation, and restore normal joint function, leading to pain relief.

How Spinal Adjustments work

Spinal manipulations also known as adjustments, help restore the normal function of the joint and improve its range of motion. This can reduce pain and improve overall health by reducing inflammation, improving circulation, and enhancing the flow of the nervous system. The adjustment can also stimulate the body’s natural healing processes and improve overall wellbeing.

What does a chiropractor do for lower back pain?

A chiropractor provides specialized care for lower back pain by using manual adjustments, spinal manipulations, spinal traction, corrective exercises, and other techniques to alleviate pain, improve spinal alignment, and enhance overall musculoskeletal function. Through personalized treatment plans, chiropractors aim to identify and address the underlying causes of lower back pain, promote natural healing, and restore optimal health and mobility. Their approach focuses on non-invasive, drug-free methods to provide relief, improve function, and enhance the body’s ability to heal itself.
